Context

The Interactive Map of Urban Wetlands is an ongoing project that aims to contribute as an innovative tool for integrated urban water management. It is being undertaken in Southern Chile, where urban wetlands are severely threatened by real state development, mainly due to unawareness on the many significant ecosystem services they provide - stormwater management, public space provision and climate change control, to name just a few. It is motivated by the urgent need of making wetlands visible and putting them at the core of urban planning.

Participatory Approach

Multi-stakeholder participation is key to this project. The participatory process involves collaborative mapping, workshops, focus groups and other activities, which bring together representatives of local governments, civil society organisations, education institutions, and the productive sector. The participatory approach has been undertaken to identify information needs as well as to gather, produce and validate part of the information that feeds the map.

THE MAP

The map is a web platform for collaborative mapping that aims to engage different stakeholders in wetland conservation, as well as in planning more sustainable cities. Not only is it a tool for identifying and making wetlands visible, but also for building on the knowledge around them and sharing ideas for their protection, restoration and sustainable management. By doing this, the map helps to raise awareness and fosters collective action towards liveable cities.

The platform is designed for point data mapping. Each point is defined by the combination of a cathegory (colour) and a theme (icon). Current cathegories are: Urban nature, Initiatives & good practices, Community, Problems, and History. Current themes are: Wetlands & water features, Public space, Biodiversity, Mobility & accesibility, Collective action, and Other. These are subject to change after platform piloting (October 2017).

HOW DOES IT WORK?

All the information in the main map is public and free for everyone to explore. Six simple steps are needed in order to add a new item to the map (see chart below).

The platform also allows users to add their own customized maps as a paid service, with additional cathegories and themes to choose from. These maps can be managed publicly or privately, depending on user requirements.

OPEN

Initiatives

Within the spirit of fostering and promoting collective action, the platform includes a section to showcase local initiatives regarding wetland protection and management, green infrastructure, urban water management, and other topics. The key requirement for publishing is for the initiative to imply a direct contribution towards more sustainable and liveable cities. The possibilty of including an option for crowdfunding and crowdsourcing to support these initiatives is currently being explored.
